Child Protection Policy

Safeguarding children and young people

Callan Method Organisation Limited (CMO) firmly believes that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind and in this regard recognises its responsibility to safeguard the welfare of children and young people studying with the Callan Method.

We aim to provide a safe and secure environment and equal protection from all types of harm or abuse for all our children and young people regardless of age, race, religion or belief, disability, gender or identity; one in which they feel protected, supported, valued, respected and listened to.

As part of our safeguarding policy, each school teaching with the Callan Method will:

  • promote and prioritise the safety and well-being of children and young people
  • be fully compliant with all local child protection legislation
  • ensure robust safeguarding arrangements and procedures are in operation to recruit staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made to prevent the employment of unsuitable individuals
  • ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities in respect of this safeguarding and is provided with appropriate learning opportunities to recognise, identify and respond to signs of abuse, bullying, neglect and other safeguarding concerns relating to children and young people
  • ensure that all staff feel able to raise concerns about poor or unsafe practice with regard to children and are clear to whom they should report any such concerns
  • ensure that appropriate action is taken in the event of incidents/concerns of abuse, and that support is provided to the individual(s) who raise or disclose the concern
  • ensure that confidential, detailed and accurate records of all safeguarding concerns are maintained and securely stored

Each school should clearly display their Statement of Intent, for example:

  • It is the policy of Callan Method Organisation and [____________] School to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people in our care and to protect them from all forms of abuse or harm
  • This organisation is committed to creating a safe environment in which children and young people can feel happy, comfortable and secure while engaged in any of CMO’s programmes
  • We recognise that all staff, regardless of their role, have a duty to safeguard children and promote their welfare. Our policy applies to the whole school community: all teaching and non-teaching staff, students/pupils, and volunteers working in, or visiting, the school
  • We will prevent unsupervised access to children and young people byadults who have not undergone thorough checks on their suitability and background
  • Clear procedures are in place for the identification and reporting of cases where harm or risk of harm to a child is suspected, and we ensure that all staff are aware of such procedures
  • Measures are in place to facilitate and promote the safe use of technology whilst in our care
  • We comply with all moral duties and statutory legislation on child protection issues and regularly monitor and review our safeguarding and child protection practices and procedures

A guideline to help staff

ATTITUDES

Staff should be committed to:

  • Treating children and young people with respect and dignity
  • Always listening to what a child or young person is saying
  • Valuing each child and young person
  • Recognising the unique contribution each individual can make
  • Treating all children and young people equally and avoiding having favourites
  • An awareness that inappropriate behaviour towards a child or young person is unacceptable and that their conduct towards all children and young people must be beyond reproach

PHYSICAL CONTACT

Staff should avoid physical contact if possible and never:

  • Engage in sexually provocative or rough physical games, including horseplay
  • Do things of a personal nature for a child or a young person that they can do for themselves
  • Allow, or engage in, inappropriate touching of any kind
  • Accept very personal or monetary gifts from children or young people
  • Share their personal information such as mobile phone numbers or email addresses with a child or young person
  • Communicate with a child or young person via their personal account on all social networking sites
  • Have contact with children outside of School, unless the family is already known to them

BY EXAMPLE

Staff should endeavour to:

  • Provide an example which we would wish others to follow
  • Use appropriate language with children and young people and challenge any inappropriate gesture or language used by a young person or child or an adult working with young people
  • Respect a young person’s right to privacy
  • Report any over-familiar behaviour from a child towards them

ONE-TO-ONE CONTACT

Staff should:

  • Try to avoid putting themselves in a situation where they are alone with a child, by keeping doors open, keeping the child in view of others, and staying close to other children or staff.
  • In the unlikely event of having to meet with an individual child or young person, make every effort to keep this meeting as open as possible
  • If privacy is needed, ensure that other staff are informed of the meeting and its whereabouts
