Callan Method training workshops in Brazil
30th September 2024
It’s been a busy period for Callan Method training lately, including a very rewarding trip to Brazil to deliver a series of two-day training workshops for groups of experienced teachers, co-ordinators and school owners. The goal was to develop their Callan skills and help them and their students to get the most out of the Method, as well as it being a chance for them to ask questions and share their own experiences. It was also a great opportunity for everybody to get to know one another and bond with members of their extended Callan family.
We covered a lot of ground, but focused heavily on a couple of important areas. We spent a good deal of time working on good prompting and feeding, practising getting the timing right, and also the intonation, so as to help students to speak as quickly and fluently as possible. The aim was to feed smoothly and provide the right support to avoid the dreaded ‘tennis-rally answers’ that can often become a frustrating habit in both offline and online lessons, where students end up simply copying the answer from the teacher in short chunks.
I also gave everyone a lot of detailed advice about adopting the right approach to new work, and went over specific techniques that will make their teaching as clear, helpful and efficient as possible. We practised lots of different sections together from various Callan stages, and they all now know the value of the ‘shlobadob test’ when preparing new work! If you’d like to know what on earth that is, then a training workshop could really benefit you too!
I’d like to thank the following Accredited Schools and Registered Teachers for taking part: BC English, Indaiatuba; Planet School, Mogi das Cruzes; The Family, São José dos Campos; Get It, Taubaté; Oldcastle School, Barueri; Revolution School, Pindamonhangaba; Get It, Manaus; Winner Idiomas, Três Lagoas; London Study Center, Valinhos; Mr. English, Salvador; Connection School, Guaratinguetá; Revolution School, Volta Redonda; UK School, Jacareí; BeBlue Personal English, São Pedro; Sinval Henrique Barbosa, São Paulo; Letícia Santos Resende, Caçapava. I really enjoyed working with teachers from so many different schools, and we made some great progress together. Everybody went away with a much clearer understanding of how to deliver the best possible Callan lessons for their students, as well as how to pass those skills on to the other teachers at their schools.
This is how Sinval summed up the experience:
“The training was amazing. I am so glad I had the opportunity to attend it in person. You explained important details during the review that make the students’ learning more efficient. You also taught us in detail many possibilities of teaching new words in a simple, but very clear way. You turned something that seemed difficult into something easy. I was very impressed with your skills. I really recommend the training for all teachers who teach using the Callan Method.”
If you’d like to follow Sinval’s recommendation and arrange a training workshop for your teachers, write to me at [email protected] and I’ll be very happy to set that up for you.
