The Online Callan Classroom (the OCC) is a professional teaching platform, purpose-built for delivering the best online Callan Method lessons. In March 2020, we rolled out this unique virtual classroom because COVID-19 had suddenly forced us all to operate online. Thankfully, it was an enormous help to many, and, since coming out the other side of lockdown, most of you have continued to use it to teach online, and others have joined in developing the online side of their business.
In tandem with this, we’ve quietly been developing the OCC, bringing in improvements and updates to both functionality and layout. Most recently, we’ve undertaken a complete revision of the Callan English Stages 1–4 Teacher’s eBooks to make them perfect for online lessons.
So, whether you haven’t logged in to the OCC for a while or you’re yet to try it out, we’d suggest now would be the perfect time.
OCC features
Our many years of experience with the Callan Method combined with invaluable customer feedback has enabled us to design a platform with features that make it the only way to deliver smooth and fast-paced Callan Method lessons optimized for online. Scheduling and notification: You can schedule lessons as far in advance as you want, with each student receiving an email reminder and lesson link a full hour before the lesson starts.
Easy planning: Enter the course, stage, start page, reading, dictation and finish page in advance; it’ll all be ready for you when you enter the OCC for your lesson.
All materials included: For every course, all Teacher’s eBooks and Demonstration Charts are integrated directly into the classroom interface – no need to toggle between tabs or use physical books.
Revised eBooks with extra charts: Online teaching used to mean tweaking or even omitting certain questions, but not anymore. The new Callan English Teacher’s eBooks for Stages 1–4 use wording that works perfectly in OCC lessons. The result is that we’ve completely removed any need for teachers to ‘adapt’ on the fly.
In addition, the OCC contains an extra six charts designed specially for use with the OCC Teacher’s eBooks, meaning that these new eBooks offer the optimal teaching experience and provide students with Callan English lessons that are truly designed for online.
One-touch random prompter: Hitting the spacebar while teaching will instantly allocate a question to a random student. And the system automatically tracks and displays how often each student is selected, ensuring everyone gets equal speaking time.
Visual cueing: When a student is selected, their screen lights up to signal that the question is theirs, so teachers don’t have to use students’ names when teaching a group lesson.
Getting started with the new OCC eBooks
The new eBooks are loaded inside the OCC and ready to use, but, as some content is significantly revised, we recommend teachers to have a quick read-through of what they’ll be teaching before diving into a live lesson. This is easy for anyone with a Teacher’s eBook Subscription; the books, complete with charts, can be accessed in the mobile Callan App and are also available via a Teacher account at callan.app. Managers can just allocate the books to teachers in the normal way, allowing them to explore the updated content at their convenience.
