Our range of publications
The Callan Method offers learners constant speaking and listening practice in the classroom, and teaches English quickly and effectively.
The core Callan Method course consists of 12 levels, or stages. There is a separate Student’s Book for each stage, whereas the larger Teacher’s Books contain two stages apiece. Together, these 12 stages take learners of English from the level of complete beginner all the way to advanced (level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference).
In addition to the core Callan Method stages, there is Callan for Business (a full ‘stage-length’ stand-alone Callan Method module) and Callan for Kids (a special four-stage course for young learners). Finally, for teachers there is the Callan Method Teacher’s Guide, an essential reference book that explains everything they need to know about using the Callan Method.
All publications can be purchased at our online shop, and are available either in printed form or as downloadable eBooks. Callan for Kids books, however, are only available in printed form for the time being.
MP3 recordings of Stages 1-10 are also available to students at Accredited Schools. These are downloadable from the Callan Student Practice Area (CSPA) and can be used for listening practice outside the classroom.
The Callan Method Teacher’s Guide
The Callan Method Teacher’s Guide is a highly functional and user-friendly 126-page guide to using the Callan Method correctly to teach English. With practical advice from experienced trainers, this book explains everything a teacher needs to know about the Callan Method, and is an indispensable reference for anyone, whether they are experienced or just starting their initial training. Clear and detailed guidance is given on the all-important Q&A routine, effective correction, presenting new work, planning lessons, teaching beginners, managing class progress, and much more.
The Callan Method stages
The Demonstration Chart is an A4-size colour booklet for teachers. Inside, there are eight charts, which together provide all the visual materials necessary for conducting classes in Stages 1-4 (see below). No matter where a Callan Method lesson takes place – in a classroom, an office or a private home – this large-print Demonstration Chart and a Callan Teacher’s Book are the only materials a teacher requires.
Stages 1 and 2 are the beginner and post-beginner stages of the Method. They introduce vital building blocks, such as the verbs “be” and “have”, the present simple and present continuous, subject and object pronouns, and much indispensable vocabulary. Stages 1 and 2 constitute the essential foundations for learning that follows at higher levels. The Teacher’s Book for these stages also contains important instructions and guidance for teaching effectively at this low level.
Stages 3 and 4 take learners through the elementary level to the beginning of their intermediate-level studies. Students continue to build vocabulary, and are introduced to structures that open new doors for them as regards their communicative ability. Comparative and superlative forms, the past simple, the present perfect, future forms, and basic conditional structures are all introduced during these two stages.
Stages 5 and 6 are the first intermediate-level stages. By the end of Stage 6, students have covered all the grammatical structures one might expect to be tested in a B1-level English exam, such as the passive voice and reported speech.
Stages 7 and 8 continue intermediate-level learning, building on and consolidating the language that has been acquired in the preceding stages. Rather than the ‘large’ areas of grammar introduced in Stages 5 and 6, however, students are asked to consider more detailed or ‘smaller’ areas such as the finer points of relative clauses, and how the verb “wish” is used. Stages 7 and 8 also see the introduction of some common English idioms.
Stages 9 and 10 are upper intermediate-level stages of the Method. The main focus of Stages 9 and 10 is to expand the students’ vocabulary and provide important practice with more refined aspects of language use – for example, how “will” and “would” can be used to talk about habits, and the difference between “It’s time for me to do …” and “It’s time I did …”. By the end of Stage 10, a Callan Method student will be able to prepare for exams at B2 level (CEFR) armed with an impressive stock of vocabulary, and without having to confront any unfamiliar grammatical concepts.
Stages 11 and 12 are the advanced levels of the Callan Method. Words and expressions taught within these stages are appropriate for learners studying at level C1 of the CEFR, and the books also introduce some advanced points of grammar that students are expected to know when sitting EFL exams at this level. In addition to the Callan Method speaking practice, there are exercises to revise collocations and introduce new expressions, and learners are also offered clear guidance on dealing with various writing tasks they might encounter in English language tests, as well as in everyday life.
Callan for Kids
Callan for Kids takes the already animated Callan Method and tweaks it to provide a perfect English course for young learners. With the lively Callan Method at its core, Callan for Kids also involves children in a variety of short and engaging activities, ensuring that, while they are in their Callan classroom, they are surrounded by English, listening to it and speaking it all the time. And the A4-size Student’s Books contain hundreds of colour illustrations that bring the text to life and complement learning.
In addition to the four Student’s Books (and two Teacher’s Books), there is also a dedicated Callan for Kids Demonstration Chart booklet containing 20 colour charts, and a set of 11 posters to liven up the classroom walls.
Callan for Kids is designed to be compatible with the core Callan stages, with the language syllabus reflecting that of Stages 1-3. This means that, at the end of their course, children will easily be able to continue learning English with the Callan Method, from Stage 4.
Callan for Business
Callan for Business is a full ‘stage-length’ stand-alone Callan Method module with separate Student’s and Teacher’s Books. Learners are introduced to around 700 business-related words, phrases and idioms, providing them with the confidence to handle any working environment where the English language is used. Rather than teaching faddish expressions that soon become out of date, Callan for Business gives learners the English that they will come across, and will need to use, in the world of work.
Important business terminology is clearly explained, and the many thought-provoking questions ensure that students stay focused at all times on the meaning and use of the target language. Learners also benefit from quick revision exercises, and sections offering guidance on writing tasks commonly encountered in the workplace (practice homework material is provided).
Callan for Business is most suitable for learners at upper-intermediate level and above.
